By converting PET bottles into polyester polyols, Kingspan recycles 1 billion PET bottles per year for use in the production process
2025-02-26
Kingspan Group, a leading global provider of high-performance building solutions, has announced that it has achieved its ambitious goal of recycling 1 billion PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles per year for use in its production processes by 2025.
This achievement is part of a collaboration with Synthesia, a subsidiary of the Kingspan Group, which specializes in the production of chemical products for thermal and acoustic insulation, polyester polyols and polyurethane systems.
At its plant in Barcelona, Spain, Synthesia uses post-consumer PET as a raw material to manufacture polyester polyols, which are used in the manufacture of various insulation and insulation board products of the Kingspan Group. This recycling process not only helps reduce the amount of discarded PET that ends up in landfills or the ocean, but also reduces the reliance on the original raw materials. With buildings and infrastructure accounting for 38.8 billion tonnes of raw materials consumed globally each year, such technologies will play a key role in transforming the way resources are used and managed in the construction industry.
Increasing the use of recyclable, biobased and renewable materials is an important aspect of the Kingspan Group's recycling strategy. Recycling one billion PET bottles by 2025 is a key element of this strategy and the foundation for the Kingspan Group to accelerate its transition to a circular economy as part of its broader "Planet Passionate" environmental sustainability initiative launched in 2019.
Holly Loughman, Head of Group Sustainability at Kingspan, said: "Achieving the goal of recycling one billion PET bottles for use in our manufacturing processes is a key milestone in our Planet Passionate programme and we are extremely proud to have achieved our target a year ahead of schedule. This is a testament to the dedication of our team and the continued pioneering of innovative recycling technologies in our Synthesia business."
Vittorio Bonapama, Research and Development Manager at Synthesia, added: "The demand for solutions to the problem of plastic pollution will only increase, and we are pleased to be able to provide technology that contributes to this global effort, while also supporting the construction industry's transition to a circular economy." This milestone is a great indicator of what is possible as we work to change the way the world's finite resources are used. For us at Synthesia and the entire Kingspan Group, this is just the beginning; We are also recycling insulation waste using our advanced technology, which will help us as an organisation to make further important progress towards our recycling goals."
