SABIC launches a new PCR-based NORYL™ portfolio to help customers reduce their carbon footprint

This new PCR-based technology can be integrated into more than 200 existing NORYL resin grades and can be added to
several new grades depending on specific customer requirements. This grade includes glass fiber reinforced grade and
non-reinforced non-flame retardant grade two categories of products. In addition, SABIC is able to provide resin customization
services to meet specific application requirements as well as a full range of technical support services. New PCR-based technologies
help improve product cyclability while maintaining the robust physical properties required in demanding applications. This innovative
sustainable solution is one of the first materials technologies based on polyphenylene ether (PPE) with a high post-consumer recycling content.
"Our new PCR-based NORYL resin technology is another milestone in SABIC's long-term growth strategy to meet customers' sustainability
requirements and improve product recycling." SABIC Specialty Division LNP and NORYL business management director Zhao Fanli said.
"Increasing the amount of PCR in our products is one of the ways we improve the sustainability of our products. In addition, we are the first
company in the industry to launch a chemical upcycling process for single-use polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, and we are also working
to expand the use of bio-based raw materials in our products. As an example of SABIC's outstanding sustainability efforts, these initiatives are a
testament to the fact that we are not only looking to the future, we are also committed to the present with groundbreaking products."
New production process challenges - PCR-based engineering thermoplastics
"Developing PPE materials with a high proportion of recycled materials is not a simple task. That means solving a whole set of technical challenges."
Luc Govaerts, Technical Director of SABIC's Specialty Materials Division. "With specialized products and sophisticated technology, our scientific experts
have developed a new PCR-based product portfolio. Today, we have successfully introduced the first stable flame retardant NORYL material. Even in
harsh outdoor environments, the material offers excellent hydrolytic stability, dimensional stability and excellent mechanical retention.
Depending on the application, customers can replace their existing fossil-based NORYL grades with our new PCR-based technology to achieve the
desired performance while reducing their carbon footprint."
The new NORYL NH5120RC3 resin is non-chlorine and non-bromine flame retardant, further enhancing sustainability. The material is suitable for electrical
applications such as heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC) housings and photovoltaic/solar junction boxes. In samples with a thickness of 1.5 mm,
the UL94 flame retardant rating was V1. In addition, the resin achieves a good balance of fluidity, thermal properties and creep resistance.
NORYL NH5120RC3 resin has been marketed worldwide.
Bio-based alternatives are on the horizon
To further broaden its sustainable materials portfolio, SABIC is developing a bio-based PPE technology that can be used to formulate any NORYL resin grade.
Based on ISCC PLUS certified raw materials, this bio-based technology will enable customers to customize a variety of resin grades such as NORYL, NORYL GTX,
NORYL PPX and Flex NORYL with nearly 100% renewable content on demand.
