December 25, 2025 - Covestro, a global leader in high-performance polymer materials, and Allmed, an international professional company specializing in blood purification, announced a partnership to jointly research the recycling and reuse of discarded artificial kidney filters. The study will explore the potential of recycling polycarbonate from medical devices and using it in new products containing recycled materials.

This collaboration aims to develop a circular economy model for medical devices by verifying the technical feasibility and economic benefits, while addressing the complex regulatory environment in the medical waste management sector. Allmed and Covestro are working with other partners in the UK, including Allmed's distribution partner Kimal, a leading regional hospital trust, and a specialized recycling company, to prepare for the first recycling trial.
Wang Li, the global president of Covestro's Engineering Plastics Division, said: "The circular economy in the medical field is still in its infancy, but it has huge potential. We hope to prove through this feasibility study that even complex medical devices like artificial kidney filters can be recycled and become an important source of high-quality polycarbonate recycled materials, rather than being incinerated or landfilled."
Allmed is also committed to achieving ambitious sustainable development goals. The company's CEO, Ahmed Sorour, said, "Blood purification equipment is crucial for life-saving treatments, but it also requires a lot of resources. Our goal is to prove that outstanding medical performance and ecological responsibility can go hand in hand."
Matt Press, the CEO of Kimal Group, added: "We are extremely proud that Allmed has chosen Kimal and the UK market as the pioneers for this outstanding and pioneering project."
