On July 10, 2025, Algenesis announced that it had received the silver certification from the international authoritative sustainability assessment organization EcoVadis. With an outstanding score of 72 points, Algenesis ranked among the top 10% of over 130,000 evaluated enterprises worldwide, demonstrating its firm commitment to responsible business practices.
The EcoVadis assessment system covers 21 standards in four major areas: environment, labor and human rights, business ethics, and sustainable procurement.
Nick Sandland, the Chief Commercial Officer of Algenesis, said: "We are very pleased to receive this award. This fully demonstrates that we have been adhering to the right principles throughout the process of developing our business. By developing plant-based, biodegradable polyurethanes as alternatives to the traditional petroleum-based polyurethanes, and eliminating harmful microplastic pollution at the source, this strategy has received authoritative recognition."
Algenesis's proprietary Soleic® is a high-performance, biodegradable plant-based polyurethane that is widely used in footwear, coated textiles, and consumer products, helping manufacturers reduce their carbon footprint and create circular products. Unlike traditional plastics, Soleic® can naturally decompose in compost, soil, and marine environments, and does not release microplastics.
It is reported that Algenesis was founded by three highly respected scientists from the University of California's Institute for Sustainable Development, namely Stephen Mayfield, Michael Burkart and Robert "Skip" Pomeroy. The company has always been at the forefront of sustainable material innovation. Based on algae and non-food plants, the company has developed bio-based polyols, bio-based polyurethane foams, and bio-based thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU), and has launched them on the market through its B2B material brand Soleic®. Soleic® has been applied in the coated fabrics manufactured by Trelleborg and the phone cases produced by RhinoShield.
