SK chemicals is promoting the sustainable development of the European automotive market by supplying recycled materials to global automotive brands.
On June 25, 2025, SK chemicals signed an exclusive cooperation agreement with Austrian automotive carpet manufacturer Durmont and South Korean logistics and supply chain management company Paarang at its ECOLAB headquarters in Seoul, South Korea.
On June 25, 2025, SK chemicals signed an exclusive cooperation agreement with Austrian automotive carpet manufacturer Durmont and South Korean logistics and supply chain management company Paarang at its ECOLAB headquarters in Seoul, South Korea.
Durmont is an Austrian manufacturer of automotive carpets, producing carpet rolls for approximately 7 million vehicles annually. In 2023, Durmont was acquired by the Dutch Tier 1 automotive supplier Visscher-Caravelle Group, which holds a market share of over 40% in the European automotive floor mat and accessories market and serves several major European car brands. Paarang, leveraging its expertise in logistics and supply chain management, is committed to enhancing the reliability and efficiency of the entire transaction process.
Three companies have successfully utilized SK chemicals' differentiated CR (Chemical Recycled) PET material solutions to develop finished products such as yarns, carpets, and floor mats. These products meet automotive testing requirements and quality standards. The signing of this exclusive cooperation agreement aims to accelerate the establishment of the supply chain and market promotion.
According to the agreement, SK chemicals will supply Durmont with its recycled PET material, SKYPET® CR. SKYPET® CR is a material containing 100% recycled components, certified by ISCC PLUS, and is fully recyclable. The common goal of the three companies is to promote the wide application of such sustainable material solutions in the market.
SKYPET® CR utilizes SK chemicals' chemical recycling technology to enable the recycling of waste plastics at the molecular level, maintaining high quality even after repeated recycling. Notably, through the application of chemical recycling technology, the quality level of SKYPET® CR remains close to that of virgin petroleum-based products even after repeated recycling - a significant difference from traditional recycling methods, making it an ideal material for establishing a closed-loop system.
By applying SKYPET® CR to automotive carpets and floor mats, these products can be depolymerized and recycled after reaching the end of their service life, thus establishing a closed-loop system within the automotive industry and potentially helping companies meet the requirements of circular economy regulations such as the End-of-Life Vehicles Directive (ELV).
SK chemicals will deepen its cooperation with Durmont and Visscher-Caravelle Group, and at the same time expand strategic partnerships with other global automotive brands in multiple parts and application fields.
SK chemicals' CEO Ahn Jae-hyun stated: "In Europe, with the implementation of policies such as carbon neutrality regulations and the ELV Directive, the demand for the recycling and reuse of automotive materials is becoming increasingly urgent. SK chemicals will continue to utilize depolymerization technology to meet the material and performance requirements of automotive parts and, in collaboration with industrial partners, jointly promote sustainable development in the industry."
In 2023, SK chemicals invested 1.3 trillion won (approximately 94 million US dollars) to establish the SK Shantou Factory in Guangdong, China, building the world's first commercial chemical recycling raw material and product production facility. In South Korea, SK chemicals also set up a circular innovation center within the Ulsan factory, which includes a pilot plant that uses chemical methods to decompose waste plastics and produce recycled raw materials (r-BHET), continuously expanding its production and R&D infrastructure related to recycling.
